That was the scene during our mobile escape room experience at the Pasea Hotel in Huntington Beach for our client’s team building sessions. The first few moments are chaos and then the wheels start turning. Your group begins to unravel the puzzles, tasks, and challenges that lead to the answer. Switches get flipped to reveal important information. Wires are cut to avoid catastrophic meltdowns. For this client they had 2 groups of 15 people that they wanted to pit against the super villain we built our room around. We ran the room in 2 sessions with a debrief at the end. In the team building world we know that it’s not the activity that is important. It’s how your group shows up and performs during the activity. The debrief allows us to help the group reflect on the experience and draw meaning from the day. Escape rooms are a natural fit for team building and we LOVE watching the excitement build as the groups solve our puzzles. Growing up in Southern California I spent many summer nights camping at the beach side resort of Newport Dunes. What was once a quiet staycation spot for local families, has become a popular event destination. Amazon.com’s App Store team asked us for a unique team outing in Dana Point. They’re a new team that works well together but their manager is working to elevate them to amazing. He wanted to dig a little deeper using creativity as a vehicle for interaction. Our Team Graffiti paired them up with a facilitator and a world class graffiti artist, ManOne Graffiti Artist. The team explored the concept of individual identity through graffiti “tags’ in Lantern Bay Park by the Laguna Cliffs Marriott. Each member created their own graffiti name, called a “tag” in the graffiti world. A tag is more than just a name it’s an identity much like a corporate brand. Colors, letter style, and writing style are important to establishing identity. As they shared their new tags with each other ManOne offered tips and technique mixed with colorful graffiti history. Markers in hand they turned our graffiti walls into a colorful feast for the eyes.
Corporate Teams in the Graffiti World
The graffiti equivalent of a team is known as a crew. Every artist has a one or more crews that they identify with. Crews provide safety, inspiration, help on large pieces, and family. The correlation with a project team resonated strongly with Amazon. The Amazon.com group was now a graffiti crew and ManOne graduated them to spray paint. After an interactive graffiti lesson, together they chose a word that has meaning and relevance to the team and their goals at work. Using the word “craft” the crew chose their colors for their final masterpiece on canvas. ManOne sketched it out in paint on a primed cotton canvas and the crew took over. They filled in the piece taking turns using the colors they’d chosen. ManOne took over after all the color was filled in and showed us why he’s a master of his craft. Hey added outlines and depth that made the canvas come to life.

Be Bold! Nike approached us to create a unique team building experience for them. They’ve done it all and needed a fresh concept for their meeting in Huntington Beach. We’ve been working with several top level Graffiti Artists to create a funky new concept for our clients. We knew our Mural Madness would be a perfect fit with Nike. On the day of the event they arrived with no idea of what they’d be doing. After a quick icebreaker our Artist took over and the group got colorful. Markers in hand they learned how to create a “tag” or nickname then got to practice writing on one of our portable walls.
Got your Name? It’s time to paint! With aerosol spray paint cans in hand they practiced making lines, shapes, and fills. This was all prep before the attempted what the graffiti world calls a Piece, slang for masterpiece. Our Artist laid down the foundation and the team worked together to fill it in and choose the colors. This is the perfect cocktail hour event and great for venues like Pelican Hill near Newport, Montage in Laguna Beach, or the Hyatt Regency. Imagine the Amazing Race and Survivor mashed together with a lot of caffeine and holiday spirit. You’ll need strategy, spirit, and lots of cheer if you want to be the big gift winner! This team building competition plays well with Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Balboa.

We had a great time lawn bowling with HGST in Orange County! Having recently been acquired by Western Digital, the goal was to give the staff a chance to get to know one another. Lawn bowling combined with a gorgeous day and an ocean view was perfect for this team building event. It’s light competition, relaxed pacing, and accessible to anyone regardless of physical strength. We loved how HGST really embraced the spirit of the day by wearing the traditional all white associated with the sport of lawn bowling. After a quick lesson the teams jumped right into the tournament that we’d arranged for them. We finished it out with a large group challenge called a Spider Bowl.
