Large Group Team Building: 5 Ideas With A CSR Focus!

As we look toward the end of the year I get excited for our corporate give back events.  I love seeing the ways companies use their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments to become heroes to their local communities.  Whether your company culture includes year round employee volunteering or a charitable large group team building event, here are five ways your team can give back.

1. Beach Clean Up Large Group Team Building

large-group-team-building-beach-cleanupAll the fun in the sun of a beach day coupled with the feel good emotions of civic responsibility make beach clean ups a popular option.  Plenty of gloves, trash bags and trash pickers help keep the gross factor down while staff comb the shore for “buried treasure”.  Consider giving the event a competitive edge and reward the team that has the most bags filled.  Be sure to take before and after pictures so your team can reflect on all the good they did for the environment!

2. Toy Drive with a Twist

large-group-team-building-toy-driveSpice up your year-end Toys for Tots drive with a Minute to Win It: Holiday Edition event.  Offer up awesome toys as prizes that winning teams can earn for each round of competition playing games inspired by the television show, Minute to Win It. Then round up these toys to make a truly meaningful donation delivery.  Cap the night off with hot cocoa and caroling for a festive good time.  And might we suggest one of the games your staff of elves compete in be the “Tinsel Twerk”?

3. Bike Build

large-group-team-building-bike-buildA popular option for a reason.  Everyone remembers receiving their first bike.  Bicycles symbolize freedom, self reliance, and opportunity.  Avoid the headache of following complicated instructions by having our facilitators gamify the experience.  Teams can compete to earn parts for their bicycle and then be assisted in the assembly by experienced technicians.

4. Local Nonprofit Love

If you’re wondering how to best benefit your local community- just ask!  We loved helping Working Wardrobes which provides professional interview wear for homeless or financially unstable applicants.  Staff were able to volunteer their time in sorting donations and organizing inventory.  Many local organizations appreciate the man hours that large groups can provide.

5. Super Hero Kits For Kids

large-group-team-buildingWe think the brave kids battling illness at children’s hospitals are super heroes and they need to supplies to look the part.  Your team can flex their creativity and imagination by creating shields and masks for local super kids.

These activities can stand alone or be paired with other events like year end meetings or holiday parties.  There’s no wrong way to give back, so feel free to think outside the box.  We’ve decorated duffel bags for foster youth, painted surfboards for injured veterans, and assembled hygiene kits for those displaced from permanent housing.

Charity Bike Build – Los Angeles Team Building

A Charity Bike Build in Los Angeles adds a feel-good community service piece to your next event. Connecting your team to need in the community allows a little heart to sneak into working relationships. Recent studies find that personal connections are one of the best indicators of a high performing teams.  In our Los Angeles bicycle build your teams will have a chance to be creative, assume leadership roles, and dig below the surface. Everyone remembers their first bike. Bicycles are a symbol of freedom, choice, and independence to kids everywhere. This bike build not only connects team members it also shows the community what your company stands for. It’s a great addition to sales conference or a fabulous way to end the year.

How A Charity Bike Build Works

Each team must deliver 3 things – an assembled bicycle, a card for the child,  and a marketing piece to accompany it. They must be creative, create a budget, and deliver the project on time if they want to win. With a limited budget they must purchase tools and marketing materials. Additional funds are available for teams that complete cash challenges.

Who Receives The Bikes

We build partnerships with charities that are close to your event site. These can include Boys & Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, or regional entities. This opens the door to the possibility of having the kids on-site to receive the bicycles. When the kids are involved we make it a big reveal for your guests. It’s a heartwarming moment that your group will never forget.

Give Back for Your End of Year Office Party

We may still be melting in the August heat, but as Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) reminds us- Winter is Coming. We are approaching that time of year where we can appreciate all we have to be grateful for and help those who have been less fortunate.  At Firefly we are lucky that we’re able to assist companies in making a difference for their communities in Los Angeles and Orange County with our Big Give events.  We know that need is need and any CSR commitment goes a long way to improving lives. Consider the following Holiday Party ideas benefit your staff as well as your chosen charity.

Involve Your Employees

Some companies choose to generously make a monetary gift to a local charity and announce it at their holiday party.  This garners some heavy applause and certainly benefits the charity, but what impact does it have on your staff other than that momentary appreciation?  Staff want to feel responsible for a corporate donation.  That’s why we put participants to work at our Big Give event.  Teams earn donation supplies by completing fun challenges during the high energy, fast paced event.  Because staff have had to earn the donation supplies they feel a sense of ownership and accomplishment.  This makes a connection for them between productivity and altruistic rewards which could have positive effects all year long.

Ways To Donate

After completing their team challenges teams use the provided supplies to assemble their team’s donation.  We’ve worked with many different charities so you’ll be able to select a cause that’s important to you.  Past events have seen the assemblage of:
Backpacks stuffed with school supplies for children living in poverty
Decorated duffel bags for kids in foster care
Hygiene kits and Payday Pails for job seekers trying to reenter the workforce
– Super Hero Starter Kits for hospital bound children
– Bicycle Assembly and Donation

The best part of any Big Give is the presentation of the donation.  This is when you get to present the work your staff has done to a representative from the selected charity.  They will explain what their organization does and how your group has helped.  One of my favorite memories was seeing kids of the Los Angeles Boys and Girls Club presented with brand new bicycles.  Several of the children didn’t know how to ride, having never had a bike on which to learn.  That didn’t stop them from gleefully pushing themselves around and excitedly ringing their bells.

A Big Give event involves your staff in your contribution.  Excited by your CSR commitment they become more engaged in your company.  Make a difference in your community and inspire your staff through a partnership with FireFly Team Events. Our Big Give events can easily be produced at your place of business, hotel lawns, conference rooms, and even the parking lot. We’ll help you customize the team building event to your space.

Super Hero Kits – Fresh Charity Team Building Idea

Charity team building events are a phenomenal option for your corporate group.  Make a positive impact in your local community while boosting employee engagement.  No charity team building is more jam packed with kick awesomeness than our Future Heroes experience.

corporate team building super hero kits girl holding shieldGather your super squad to build kits for the bravest heroes we know – kids at local children’s hospitals battling chronic and life threatening illness.  When a child receives a Future Super Hero kit they discover a sturdy shield they can customize with their own super insignia as well as a mask, bracers, and the top secret Super Hero Code (with plenty of super stickers of course).

How Do Super Hero Kits Help?

The hospital can be a scary place for children.  Removed from their home and the majority of their friends and family, surrounded by strange machines – fun play can be hard to find.  With a Future Super Hero kit kids fashion themselves the way they wish to be seen: strong, brave, and making a difference. They’re not sick anymore they ARE the Flash. They ARE Rey from Star Wars. Check out this Ted Talk on how even a simple posture change can dramatically improve your health . The power of pretend has significant effect on reality. Help us give these kids a fighting chance!

How Can We Book a Future Hero Team Building?

Our Future Super Hero kit builds are fully scalable for different group sizes. There is no limit to the impact your group can make!  Last year we teamed up with hundreds of Microsoft employees and vendors for a 900 person mixer to build a mountain of super hero kits for the children at nearby CHOC.  Large corporate groups love the kit builds because it’s easy for team members to travel down the assembly line constructing their personal donation. It’s fun to watch the amount of kits grow – a great visual demonstration of the effect a team can have by working together. We also have competitive versions of this event for the Sales and Marketing groups out there…

Give Back With Charity Team Building in Los Angeles

If your corporate team is looking to give back, Los Angeles is home to many deserving charities in need of your service. We work to ensure your charitable giving is matched with enthusiasm and energy. We infuse these events with extra fun challenges to “win” the supplies to complete the donation. Charity team building events fulfill corporate social responsibility and promote pride in the staff attending. Los Angeles is home to plenty of good causes. In the past we’ve partnered with charities such as Boys and Girls Club, Families Forward, local children’s hospitals and Together We Rise to produce team building experiences like these:

Bike Builds

Bicycles are often the first sign of independence for children. Learning to ride takes bravery and commitment, which is rewarded by the exhilarating freedom of being able to travel under their own power. Many children are not given this experience simply because of their families’ socioeconomic standing. We bring in bicycles for teams to build and toss in some fun challenges as well. Once construction is complete we encourage teams to deliver marketing pitches for their bicycles which usually degenerates into giggle inducing skits. Craft supplies are provided for teams to create cards to include with the bicycles for the lucky recipient. Our charity bike builds are the perfect way to incorporate CSR into your meeting.

Super Hero Starter Kits

Many children are forced to face challenges too scary for most adults in the form of chronic or terminal illness. Luckily Los Angeles is home to an amazing children’s hospital St. Jude’s as well as neighbor to Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). We celebrate these young patients’ bravery with our Super Hero Starter Kits. Kids are thrilled to open these packages containing a mask, cardboard shield and craft supplies. They love decorating their super hero shields to suit their own personality. Teams can help kids fight their battle by assembling these kits during our high spirited super hero team events.

Care Package Builds

Sometimes it’s basic items like school supplies or canned food that are the most appreciated. Our care package builds for team building can be customized to suit your team’s interests. We’ve hosted Minute to Win It competitions where items are won through challenges and recently, we had teams create miniature golf courses out of the pantry items that were being donated to Second Harvest.  Care package builds are always well organized with each team donating their own package, identical to the others save for any decorations team members may have been added.  We love seeing teams having a good time, while giving back to the community.

Charity events are always an excellent team building experience as groups have a fun, memorable time while doing something worthwhile. To find out how you can give back to your community and plan a charity event contact us at james@fireflyteamevents.com

Golf Themed Charity Team Building Event – CSR

Argyle socks and a putter are the key ingredients to our golf themed team building event for charity.  Your team will design, build, and market a minature golf hole that even Tiger Woods would want to play. To win you’ll have to prove your creation is playable and convince our judges why yours is the most innovative hole on the market. We’ve seen teams build the classic golf windmill under the hot sun in Las Vegas and others have constructed water features on the event lawn at Pelican Hill Resort in Orange County. The magic of this event is that your team must include non-perishable food items in their structure. At the end of the event the food is donated to a local charity or food bank like Second Harvest in Irvine, Ca. This is the perfect event for a group that wants a CSR experience with a little creative competition and a lot of heart.

Orange County Team Building that Gives Back: Corporate Social Responsibility

Charity team BuildingCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in team building usually refers to adding a charitable or environmental element to your event. The combination of CSR with team building can lead to community involvement, environmental stewardship and it shows the world what your company stands for. Studies have shown that employee retention is stronger when employees are allowed to devote a portion of their work week to volunteering. A great CSR event is energizing and inspiring and often leads to a more productive workforce.  In 2014 Hewlett-Packard had 40,000 employees in 82 countries log more than 1.6 million volunteer hours. What will your impact be?

Need ideas? We LOVE partnering with companies that want to make a difference. We are constantly finding new ways to partner our clients and worthy causes. Our most common charitable team building events are the Charity Bike Build and the Care Package Assembly. These are common sights at Sales Conferences, quarterly meetings, and incentive trips here in Orange County. The beauty of either of these events is that there is always a need and we can complete an event in a couple of hours.

What if I want to do MORE? Your people are your biggest resource because of the skills, knowledge, and heart they bring to your organization. What if you could leverage that skill on behalf of a local charity? You probably have people dedicated to sales, marketing, and technical areas. Why not channel their talent to revitalize the processes, marketing materials, and website of a local charity? Instead of helping a few people, you lay the groundwork for exponential good. Charities often lack the funds or expertise to accomplish what your team could do in a single session. Charitable team building shouldn’t always be about donating it should also be about empowering, teaching, and inspiring. Our  Help-A-Thon service is perfect for facilitating these types of interactions. Interested? Call us at 877.267.1939 or email james@fireflyteamevents.com
